Death Wish (1974)

“Conscious Objectors are unlikely vigilantes.”

also…

“Can you give me $20 in quarters, please?”

Modern “revenge” films tend to follow a certain formula. Something bad happens to a good person and wow! it just so happens that the victim de jour has a family member who, unknown to everyone, “has a very particular set of skills”…or is John Rambo. But that wasn’t always the case.

Tucker & Dale vs. Evil (2010)

“What’s the worst that could happen?”

It’s hard to get more Friday Night Drive-Iney than a movie involving chainsaws, skinny dipping teens, wood chippers, and a cabin in the woods.

Tucker & Dale vs. Evil is a bobble headed nod to Friday the 13th, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and all the best and worst slasher films of the 80s - with a twist that is original and entertaining enough for the clichés to be fun and the gore to be tolerable.

“How Are We The Only Guys in Texas Who Don’t Own Guns?”

It’s no Bikini Valley Car Wash, but ehhh, it’s all right.

We usually try to avoid Spoilers unless it is something that shows up in the name of the movie (I’m talking to you Mr. The Invisible Man) or the first two minutes of the film, but we’re going to kick this one off with three.

Billy Jack (1971)

“When policemen break the law, then there isn't any law - just a fight for survival.”

We are big fans of Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood (and owe a review on it). One of our favorite things in that film is Brad Pitt’s Cliff Booth character.

So what does that have to do with Billy Jack?

Inglourious Basterds (2009)

Tarantino makes drive-in movies. Inglourious Basterds in a drive-in movie, mixing familiar QT features: revenge, charismatic villains, and over the top violence dressed up in a pretty genre wrapper.

In this case he actually taps a pair of genres, creating a film that is as much (or more) a nod to the spaghetti western as the WWII action film.

So what’s this movie about?

Robinson Crusoe on Mars (1964)

This Film is Scientifically Authentic…if You Think Phrenology is a Science.

So a little Behind the BMB Curtain: I rarely review a film I have already seen. When you read a write-up, it is usually based off my raw first impression of the movie. Robinson Crusoe on Mars is an exception. As a kid, I watched this film more times than I can count on TV 50 - WKBD out of Detroit, usually falling asleep half-way through. My memories of the movie were warm. Watching it for the first time in over forty years left me hot.

Django Unchained (2012)

When you go to a Tarantino movie you know what to expect.

There will be explosions. Gunfights. A great soundtrack. More obscure cultural references than you’ll hear in a 90-minute Dennis Miller HBO special. At least one sadomasochistic rope or chain scene (uggghhh). And Samuel L. Jackson.

Django Unchained is a Tarantino movie.

House of the Long Shadows (1983)

“Bllyddpaetwr will find you in its own good time…” or “Keep drinking…you’ll feel better”

House of the Long Shadows came out near the end of the drive-in era, but is solidly rooted in an earlier time. The cast - a Who’s Who of Hammer and other horror masters of the 60s and early 70s - takes us for a fun romp through twists and tropes, ending in no less than five M. Night Shyamalan-worthy moments. Spoiler Alert: We liked this movie.

Who is in the Who’s Who? Vincent Price, Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, and John Carradine enough to get you started? How about tossing in BBC tv stalwarts Sheila Keith and Julie Peasgood, Richard Hunter (The Elephant Man), Benny Hill Honey Louise English, and last but not least, our hero, Desi Arnaz Jr. ?

Or…Fangs, Free Love, and Rock & Roll!

The seventh of Hammer’s nine Dracula films, Dracula A.D. 1972, begins a century prior to the ultra hip world of Dick Nixon, Mary Tyler Moore, and the planet shaking tones of Looking Glass’ Brandy (You’re A Fine Girl)…
