Researching In Research Of

Way back in the 1970s - before Ancient Aliens were ancient and the History Channel was in the far future - there was In Search Of.

For kids like me that grew up on a steady diet of Star Trek and were discovering the weird world of UFOs, the Bermuda Triangle, and all the oddness of the time, In Search Of was the Holy Grail - a weekly dive into the unknown and unusual, conducted by our secular saint, Leonard Nimoy.

From 1977 through 1982, the series introduced me and many others to topics from UFOs and Bigfoot to the JFK assassination, the Great Wall of China, and Incan civilization. It was - at least at the time - the perfect blend of belief and skepticism; wide-eyed wonder and eye winking fun. It, along with the encouragement of some exceptional teachers, was the spark that ignited my early love for history and desire to see the world.

Not bad for a 1970s tv show.

One of my cooler discoveries has been a podcast named In Research Of.

The show is led by a guy named Blake Smith and archaeologist and author Jeb Card. Smith’s main previous work (he still does shows there) is an also cool podcast called Monster Talk, which explores monsters and monster-related topics in history and modern culture from a “skeptical” perspective.

In In Research Of, the two review each episode of the Nimoy series, looking at the claims from both a scientific and an entertainment perspective. They are clearly having a lot of fun - particularly when analyzing Leonard Nimoy’s fashion choices (trust me - it’s hilarious) and if you dig the paranormal, history, science, or the original show, you’ll have a ton of fun listening to them too.

You can check them out HERE. Let them know you heard about it at BMB ;)

Four out of Five Nimoy Leisure Suits.

This is the pilot episode of In Research Of, the show where we watch the original TV show IN SEARCH OF... and consider some of the explanations that the producers chose not to present. In our inaugural episode, we watch the TV Special In Search of Ancient Astronauts, a repackaged cut of a German documentary about Eric Von Daniken's book Chariots of the Gods.

Want a taste? You can check out their first episode here!

Dig Leonard and the mysterious? You may want to dig into one of these.
