“They Were Fresh…They Were Honest.”

We don’t do a lot of reviews of documentaries, but stumbled across this a few days ago and though it would make for a good snack in the Concession Stand.

The Beatles: Eight Days a Week is a collection of “found footage” clips, interviews, and commentary focusing on the Beatles as they kicked off the touring phase of their career. It covers their early appearances in the UK, the Hamburg tour, their first and second tours in the US, visits to Australia, Japan, and New Zealand, and then back to England for their famous Rooftop Concert.

I’ve followed the Beatles since I was a kid…they broke up when I was in grade school…so though I had a pretty good feel for them, but left this with a much better sense of who John, Paul, George, and Ringo were as people than I’ve ever had.

A few things this movie taught me:

These guys were really funny - and were amazingly fast on their feet in interviews and public appearances.

They were having a ball during these years. By the end of the film we get hints of tough times to come, but during this time they were clearly a bunch of good kids amazed with their good fortune and determined to have fun for however long it lasted.

Everyone in the band exuded amazing levels of charisma and confidence.

John, Paul, and George had enormous respect for Ringo, saying how stunned they were the first time they heard him play. They knew the first time they jammed together, Paul said, that Ringo was what made them The Beatles.

We really enjoyed this. You can catch The Beatles: Eight Days a Week HERE.

Four out of Five Days a Week.
