“It’s a vampire. Be ready for anythi…

What the #u<% is that??????”

Buy this book.

If tornado propelled sharks are ok (I’m talking to you, Sharknado), why not flying vampiric Great Whites?

When I’m not watching - and writing about - movies, grading papers, or fighting evil foreign agents, I read a lot of comic books. Comics have been a passion for close to fifty years and, like film, there are more meh and downright bad books than good ones. AVHvsNC (whew…that’s a lot of letters) is a good one.

AVH is a fun - and often funny - six issue mash-up of Jaws and The Strain, brought to you by writer Marc Von Ahnen and artists Jamal Patterson, Marc McCulsky, Jordan Beecham, Jonathan Sims, Sean Eike, and Kimmy Pop.

The art ranges from ok to really good, depending on who was holding the brush (McCulsky was my favorite, with a vibe similar to but distinguishable from Charlie Adlard’s work on The Walking Dead comic). Von Ahnen’s dialogue was also TWDish in that it often had the cadence of that book’s scribe, Robert Kirkman…but was usually both funnier and more realistic than Mr. K.

There are some surprisingly spoilerable moments (even knowing it is book about a vampire shark), so we won’t go into much more detail than we already have. I’ll leave it where I began: buy this book. It is a relatively quick read but two and a half tons of fun.

Best animal vampire since Bessie the Hellcow made her storied debut in Giant-Sized Man-Thing #5.

You can order the series digitally direct from Von Ahnen at: mvonhanen@gmail.com or via Amazon HERE.

A very strong Four out of Five Sexual Predator Dolphin.
