My Gun is Quick (1957)
“What’ll It Be Mike Honey - Me And A Million In Hot Diamonds…Or A Cheap Funeral?”
“Off my back, chic! I’m tired!”
It’s hard to match the dialogue in a Mickey Spillane story.
With a title like My Gun is Quick and a lead named Mike Hammer, a younger reader might think they have stumbled into a review of a 1970s adult film. They wouldn’t be far off because Gun isn’t for kids…or faint of heart adults.
Glory (1989)
“We must make it a whole country…for all who live here…so that all can speak.”
The United States established the Bureau of Colored Troops in May of 1863. By war’s end, 179,000 African-American would serve in the U.S. Army, and another 19,000 in the Navy. These men made up roughly 10% of the the entire Union military. Some 40,000 would die in the war.
Glory is the story of one of those one of the first African-American units - the 54th Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteers.
The Longest Day (1962)
“You are about to embark on the Great Crusade…” — General Dwight D. Eisenhower
June 5 and 6, 1944. The liberation of Europe begins.
The Longest Day tells the story of the first day of the Normandy Invasion and the battle to free Europe from Nazi occupation.
Do the Right Thing (1989)
Fight The Powers That Be…
With most movies, the review is already half-written in my head before the final credits.
I had to walk around the block, play with my dogs, and walk again before I could get my mind around how I felt after watching Do the Right Thing. Much respect to director Spike Lee for that.
So what is this movie about?
A Few Good Men (1992)
You Want a Review? You Can’t Handle a Review!
Ok, maybe you can. You are a pretty tough bunch…and there are more than a few former and current Marines sprinkled into the BMB family.
Serving in and with the military for nearly my entire adult life, I’ve heard my share of lines from A Few Good Men…but never actually saw the movie until now.
So what are the impressions of a new recruit?
Airplane! (1980)
Good comedy will make you feel a little uncomfortable.
Sitting in the cheap seats of the 21st century it is hard to look at a forty-year old movie objectively. That is especially true when it is a movie you - and a lot your generation - have fond memories of. And man, did this movie make me laugh as a kid.
“What’s the vector, Victor?”
“Roger, Roger.”
“I speak Jive.”
“Have you ever seen a grown man naked?”
Casablanca (1942)
Everybody comes to Rick’s
I don’t know if Casablanca is the best American movie ever made…but…
