The Vast of Night (2019)

Something’s Up There Now.

The Vast of Night is a 2019 direct to drive-in and streaming (via Amazon) film following a 16-year old switchboard operator named Fay (Sierra McCormick) and young radio DJ, Everett (Jake Horowitz), as they track down the source of a mysterious signal affecting communications in their small 1950s New Mexican town.

The film has received near universal acclaim from critics - it earned a 100% “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes and some pretty smart reviewers, like Jason Wiese, have written some sharp pieces on the movie.

I fell asleep watching it. Twice.

Don’t get me wrong. There are good things in this movie, most notably the incredibly likeable and talented McCormick and Horowitz. And the movie does does some interesting things with framing. But those sequences get old real quick, the story is one of the least original I’ve seen this year, and many of the film techniques lauded by other reviewers as ground breaking (e.g. a camera running near ground level, taking the viewer from one location to another) have been used in sci-fi and horror films for decades (the ground view going back to at least the first Evil Dead film).

If you dig The Twilight Zone (something the producers are counting on), watch the Twilight Zone instead. If you are into UFO conspiracy stories, try the classic Dark Skies, or tune into some old Art Bell (who I suspect was an influence in the Everett character). Or if you are just looking for something to put you to sleep…

You can catch The Vast of Night HERE and decide for yourself.
