Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

The Knights Who Say Ni

They Ask for a Shrubbery

Where’s my Hand Grenade?

Monty Python and the Holy Grail may be the best film ever made by Team Python.

Directed by TP stalwarts, Terrys Gillam and Jones (with writing credits to just about everyone and their moose), the movie is a series of skits built around King Arthur and his knights questing for (it’s not a Spoiler if its in the title!) The Holy Grail. In the course of the adventure, they run into an obsessively dedicated Black Knight (John Cleese - The Pink Panther 2), skirt the Black Death, encounter a witch trial with the always charming Connie Booth as defendant, battle a killer rabbit, and suffer the taunts of the French before the film climaxes in the mother of all fourth wall breaking scenes.

Watching it for the first time in twenty years (hard to believe this was released almost a half century ago!), I wasn’t sure how much of it would still resonate.

I laughed harder than the first time I saw it.

The movie is essentially a Python greatest hits album, containing some of their best and brightest bits. But whether you are an old fan or have never seen their work, we guarantee you cannot watch this film from end-to-end without at least one laugh out loud moment.

The world can be a little dark these days. Treat yourself to a little light and check out this genuine comedy classic.

You’ll feel better.

The members of Pink Floyd were huge Python fans and much of the funding for the movie came from earning off their “The Dark Side of the Moon” album. Additional money came from some obscure band named Led Zeppelin and a one-hit-wonder group called Genesis.

This is what their money bought:
